Bless This Mess

Raise your hand if you are guilty of the following: Saying “Please excuse my mess!” when someone comes into your home for the first (or 26th) time. BONUS POINTS IF YOUR HOUSE IS ACTUALLY CLEAN WHEN YOU UTTER THIS PHRASE. Stop apologizing for being human For years, I’ve wondered how stay-at-home moms keep their homes clean, only to discover that THEY DON’T (for the most part). And I felt absolutely BETRAYED - not by real and true stay-at-home moms, but by the expectation presented via social media. The local stay-at-home moms I’m friends with have unequivocally told me that a perfectly clean and straightened home is a myth, a pipe dream, for most of us. From August through May, I am a middle school...
When did the norm become filtering our lives down to only the perfect details to brag and show off? To get the approval of others? Scrolling through perfectly curated feeds being influenced to buy outfits that make us match every other girl out there? Do NOT get me wrong, I LOVE a good blog just like the next girl. We all read about bloggers going...
While scrolling through Instagram a couple weeks ago, I happened upon another mama’s setup to celebrate the first week of school. She had decorations in her living room, a first day of school breakfast planned out, a banner over her mantle, and several other details all fitting the theme. It was fun, creative, and adorable. “Wow,” I thought to myself, “I should do this!” But I came back to reality after a few minutes and realized that just the idea of gathering the supplies and setting it all up felt overwhelming rather than exciting. What gave that mama joy, would give me unneeded stress. These days there are so many “extras” that we can do as mamas. There’s absolutely...
Not only could I not handle riding out a storm, but I absolutely was falling apart knowing I would have to do it as a mother of three. Boom! There went a metal object and our power about 8pm on Sunday, August 29th ... 16 years exactly after Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Ida was coming in hot. I spoke with my parents who live in Houma, and they insisted on riding out the storm. This made my anxiety go through the roof. I had to rely on God and my anxiety medication to get me through that time, knowing I couldn’t make my parents come up to Baton Rouge, and I had to protect my babies. Riding it out was all I...
