Did you hear what I said? Is anyone listening? That's not what I said. Why aren't you listening? These are the thoughts I find on repeat in my mind as a new mother. There are times I feel I must look like a child myself - sipping my juice box - rambling about mindless topics, the look of an educated woman clearly a far cry from my appearance. That must be it. Because I am new to the game of child rearing I must be clueless. I need to be told, not heard. They are doing me a favor, I'll thank them later. The Change There has been a bit of an adjustment period in my life since the arrival of my...

Being a Mom without My Mom

17 years ago today I knew I would be a mom without my mom. I have struggled with writing this since my mom took her last breath on September 14, 2002. I was 23 years old. I had completed college and thought I was grown. I thought I was ready to face the world. And I was. I was just ready to face it WITH her next to me. However, after years of kicking cancer's butt, my mom took the deal of a lifetime. She accepted her wings and took flight for her heavenly shopping spree. If you knew my mother, you knew that she was a SHOPPER. I fondly recall a sign in our kitchen growing up that said “Kitchen...
As soon as he got in the van, my son confessed that he got a mark at school (a note for having done something wrong). He mentioned that there was "kind of an interesting story" to go with it and proceeded to divulge that when his class was walking to lunch, he saw the teacher's lounge, usually very visible with glass walls, covered with paper from ceiling to floor. Overcome with curiosity about what could possibly hide behind the paper, he tried to pry a piece of the paper away from the wall to sneak a peek. When he did this, the duty teacher, someone otherwise unknown to him, told him not to look. Demonstrating his characteristic genuine, innocent,...
Prepare yourself, Game of Thrones is ending. Over the past 8 seasons, we loyal Game of Thrones fans have been introduced to some of the most intriguing  characters from Robert Baratheon to the Knight King, Arya and The Hound, and my personal favorite Sansa Stark. While parenting may not be the first thing you think of when you think about Game of Thrones, there have been some incredibly interesting mom styles on this show. Some relatable and some downright insane. The wonderful parallel about Game of Thrones is that as wild as some of the characters are, they’re also quite relatable. Cersei Let’s start with Cersei. Cersei is the Kris Jenner of Westeros. She takes the term boss mom to the next level....
Well, it's no longer "gonna be May!" It's MAY! And this is potentially the most dangerous time to be me (or most teachers, honestly). It's that May-gical time between Spring Break and Summer where that one week off gave me a taste of that sweet summertime, and now I'm on the countdown. But I'm not just counting down the 13 days, 6 hours, 32 minutes time until summer break; I'm counting down the time until summer ME. Summer Me is a different human being. Summer Me is barely recognizable to my husband, kids, and even myself. She does things that Work Me wouldn't dream of doing. Summer Me has balls (mainly sno-balls, but you also get the idea). Summer Me says...
