That said, not all of Red Stick Mom’s mom hacks, tips and tricks are about fixing food or mom’s self care. Maybe you are looking for a better way to store your family’s precious photo memories. Have you ever wondered what to do with the cupcakes that your kids inevitably didn’t finish? Any given day this mama is responsible for grocery shopping, laundry, dishes, cooking, dusting, vacuuming, bathrooms, and all the scrubbing in the whole house. Throw in homeschool lessons and chauffeuring two kiddos around town to all the activities under the sun, and you have one busy mama! Recently I wrote a blog post with a few tips to make laundry easier. The first Facebook comment was from a fellow Red Stick Moms contributor about how her husband does 50% of the laundry and household chores. My thought process was something like this, "HOLD UP! Your husband does what?! I'm sorta jealous." The comment gave me pause, and put the topic of gender roles and household duties in the forefront of...
There’s this sign on our dishwasher. It says "Clean" on one side and "Dirty" on the other. It’s worn and dirty (ironically, for one side) and old. It’s been there for years and years. We’ve only had two of those signs during the entire length of our marriage (14 years this year). I don’t know why, but I like to keep the same sign and watch it age.   It’s an effort in communication. Here’s how it works: if I start to empty the sink of dirty dishes but don’t have enough to finish filling the dishwasher, I leave the sign to read “dirty.” When my husband sees there are no dishes in the sink, but has a dirty dish to...
It's hard to miss that Mother's Day is quickly approaching. TV ads tempt us to buy a sparkling piece of jewelry and retail emails remind you to get those flowers ordered. Book the brunch reservation now because it's sure to be packed. All those things sound lovely, but let's be honest about what Mom really wants this Mother's Day: love, appreciation, and a little bit of quality time. Being a mom is an amazingly rewarding, yet often thankless job. We keep everything together (often while juggling a full-time position outside the home), and put our children's priorities above ours more often than not. Even when we're beyond exhausted and our patience is shot from keeping up with the kids' endless...

We all know that motherhood is hard, and our goal is to celebrate moms all year long. However, with Mother's Day upon us, we want to take this time to recognize a local Baton Rouge mom who gives her all every single day to those around her, not only in her own family but also in her community and workplace. We want to honor the local mom who deserves the title “Red Stick Mom of the Year!” What is the 2016 Red Stick Mom of the Year? We are now accepting submissions for...
10 Things I've Learned after 10 Years of Marriage My husband and I were blessed to celebrate 10 years of marriage last month. In the early years, I hilariously assumed that when we reached this milestone we would take a luxurious vacation and/or I would totally get that upgrade to my wedding band set. After all, 10 years seemed like a lifetime away ... we'd surely have our yacht and summer home by then. So young … so stupid. Fast forward to 10 years married, we’re in our early 30s and we have sweet little ones who depend on us for everything. Money is tight. Time is tighter. We did get to go out to eat at our favorite local spot to celebrate...
