No screens before 24 months. Thereafter, children should have a maximum of 1 hour of screens until age 5. Why is this? We have all heard the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations, but does it really matter? Is that just for television time or does that include educational content as well? What our family has learned from heeding screen recommendations. Some of the reasons for the recommendations of no screen time until 24 months is because research has shown that there are zero benefits to screens, educational or not. What studies have shown are that screens before 18 months of age affect children’s speech and language skills including reading skills and attention in the long-term. What do we do in place...
I used to think podcasts were only for true crime fans. I listened to the Serial podcast about Adnan Syed years ago and haven't listened to a podcast since then. My hubby started listening to motivational podcasts on his commute to work and sent me one he thought I would enjoy. I loved the message so much that I started a search for more podcasts that would really speak to me and teach me things to help me grow and improve as a wife, mom, and Christian woman. Here are my recommendations for podcasts that will rock your world, in a good way and particular episodes that are truly amazing.  1. Don’t Mom Alone   This podcast is hosted by Heather MacFadyen...
Exercising is so important to me. I feel happier and calmer after I exercise. But so is avoiding this heat. Normally, I would walk around my neighborhood or a park. It’s a great way to feel great and meet neighbors. Since it’s been 200 degrees outside, I’ve found some pretty cool YouTube videos to work out with. These are my favorite so far. 1) Capoeira - This is an awesome form of martial arts. This is a formally illegal martial art that really strengthens the muscles. You’ll feel great. This video is by Living Room Capoeira. https://youtu.be/TuXqNsifjhI 2) Yoga - This is a very calming yoga class. It’s for beginners and is amazing. She goes step by step and keeps it simple....
My 40th birthday is right around the corner and I’m choosing to celebrate. Why? Because 40 is a milestone and it’s an excuse to have cake and ice cream! You get to do what you want, from the overboard extravagant event with all the bells are whistles to the quiet dinner at home with close friends and family. There are no rules when it comes to celebrating turning 40. Below is my list of dos and don’ts for turning 40: DO something out of the box for your birthday. Try something new and out of your comfort zone. Sign up for a cake decorating class or salsa lessons. Knock off something from your bucket list that you have been putting off. DON’T be...
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. Our daughter was diagnosed with Dyslexia in fist grade. We felt lost and unsure of what her school life would look like going forward. As I began researching Dyslexia and what that diagnosis meant, I stumbled upon Louisiana Key Academy which is a charter school here in Baton Rouge that specializes in educating children with Dyslexia. Our daughter started there five years ago! Five years later, we now know what early intervention can do. Our daughter is now reading on grade level, she uses her critical thinking skills to complete complex word problems in math, and she believes in herself again. Our daughter will never be cured of Dyslexia; however, she has and continues to...
