I listened to a podcast the other day that was talking about how women in their early thirties, married 5-7 years, fresh into motherhood, often lose their sense of self. They get so wrapped up in caring for others that their sense of identity slowly disappears. I thought a lot about this sentiment and how postpartum depression and the time in between my first born and having my second baby was so emotional. I did not take care of myself. I did not do things I love that bring me joy. I had little sense of self-worth. Now, I’m finding myself again and it has made me a happier woman, a better mom, and in the most blissful state of...
There should be a more culturally inclusive term for “Irish twins.” Clearly, “Irish twins” is a derogatory expression. However, there is value in a phrase that adequately describes the experience of giving birth to two babies within twelve months. “Twins” is not an accurate term but “giving birth to two children” also falls short. Accidentally pregnant when you are postpartum with a newborn? Trust me, it’s a different vibe. I started to suspect something was off when I felt very emotional (a telltale pregnancy sign for me) when caring for my two-year-old and three-month-old. My husband rolled his eyes at my concern and said, “Take a test so you’ll feel better.” We dug up a leftover pregnancy test from the previous...
We survived the beach with 4 kids. Alone. It was a challenge but we conquered. Ages 5,3,1, and 8months. We wanted a change of scenery and Labor Day weekend was the weekend to do it! I have read so many different lists about what to bring to the beach to be prepared and so I thought I would drop a few items that we used to help with our successful trip. 1) Beach Wagon - I recommend getting two.  One for kids to ride and one to hold all of your beach bags and beach items. they fold up easily and don't take up too much space. Can use as a bed for naps too.  Pro tip: Big Wheels for...
So you want to be more involved with your child’s school? That’s great!! I’m sure the faculty and staff would appreciate it. It’s so important to be involved with the schools that educate and shape our children’s future. The more invested parents are, the more efficient the schools can be. Take an index of your attributes. What can you personally add to your school’s well-being? Is it time, money, car, gardening, painting, photography, etc? What are you good at? What do you love? Are you a fabulous public speaker or a great mural painter? Can you read a story with energy and zest? Make a list of what you can do. Use your positive attributes to contribute. Use a list of your...
Throughout my career as a therapist, I have uncovered a couple of topics that always come up in sessions. Self-care ranks in the top three, easily. Self-care is the intentional choice to do something for yourself to preserve yourself. Self-care is restorative and mandatory if you are going to thrive. Often my clients ask, what are some examples of self-care? Well, since you asked, here are 101 ideas for self-care. Watch a sunset. Take ten deep breaths (on purpose). Attend a yoga class. Take a bubble bath. Listen to your favorite music. Take a Walk. Work out. Go paddle boarding. Bake a treat. Spend a few minutes on the swing.                                  Do a...
